The Inquirer in Philadelphia reports on busy Rittenhouse Square getting an organic remodel, rooted in biochar:

After clearing the beds of the old plantings, broken irrigation pipes, tent stakes, and a recently interred cat roused from eternal rest, [Mark Highland of Organic Mechanics] recommended tilling in large amounts of biochar – pure carbon processed to act like a reservoir, holding water and nutrients for plants in times of drought or stress.
