Biochar an ally in reducing pollution

The Lethbridge Herald reports on a recent Southern Alberta [Canada] Council on Public Affairs session on biochar at Lethbridge College:

Biochar is a material that could potentially answer many questions about sustainable agriculture and greatly benefit efforts to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the future…

Some of the properties of biochar include enhanced water retention, improved soil aeration and microbial quality, reduces nutrient-leeching water, captures organic pollutants, reduces chemical fertilizer requirements, and can effectively amend lime in saline/sodic soil.
